The black-and-red pairing is the oldest one in Japanese tableware, and the lid is what separates a miso bowl from every other bowl on the table — soup stays steaming while the rest of the meal comes together.
The finish is lacquer-style over lightweight plastic rather than traditional wood lacquer, so it survives a busy kitchen without the babysitting real lacquerware demands. The fitted lid does what lids have done on miso bowls for centuries — keeps the heat in and makes lifting it off part of the meal.
It is deeper than it photographs. Miso for one, rice for one, or a small serve of noodles all sit comfortably below the rim.
Hand wash with a normal sponge — it takes seconds and keeps the finish deep. Skip the microwave, steel wool and scouring powder.
